Well if you have more than 10,000 of ore, goods or organics it allows other players to buy your surplus. They can then trade it with other ports. It basically means your planet acts like another trade port.

Basically a means to gain some extra cash if anyone wants to use it.

Also, it is usually CHEAPER to buy those things from a planet than it is a port and resell them for even greater profit.
