Take a peek. They are using G-zip and it works just fine in IE through the corporate proxy. Perhaps you can ask what they have done to make it work. The admin (Mason) is a pretty nice guy.

Interesting... they could be doing server side gzip. Not sure if that would help or hinder us at this point. From the discusions on the phpbb I have seen, there are many that do ahave the same problem.

Actually they are NOT using GZIP. If you check their headers they are sending the data as unencoded chunks that are not gzip encoded.

Sorry, but the site isn't sending gzipped data.

You can check to see what the site is sending using a site like this...

http://web-sniffer.net/

As you can see by this...

They are not compressing or there would be the Content-Encoding header that you see on the CNN site below.

Now check the http://www.cnn.com website.

Content-Encoding:   gzip

The sniffer also gives you the size of the data compressed and uncompressed on the gzipped sites.

Odd! When I look at the boards I see this status message at the bottom:
[ Server Load (5 mins): 87 | Page generation time: 0.5034s (PHP: 73% - SQL: 27%) | SQL queries: 51 | GZIP enabled | Debug on ]

But since you mentioned it CNN works fine through the corp proxy with IE...

Is it just a phBBB thing?

No, it is just sometimes IE barfs when retrieveing gzip compressed content through a proxy. phpBB2 uses the same encoding.

And just because a site says they are set for gzip doesn't mean it is true. ;)

Another thing is some sites can detect if you are coming through a proxy server and they disable the compression. I wish I knew how they do it but some site accomplish it. Unless your proxy is sending out a header saying it doesn't support gzip.

Ah! Very enlightening. Yeah - I have to use firefox from work for AAT and then I just use IE from home. I can get the IE toolbars smaller than firefox which leaves more room for main window content.
