Well, we didn't release on sunday like we hoped and that is a GOOD thing.
We found that the mini-navmap on the main screen was really hitting the server hard. Especially with the 20,000 sector game. It was basically calculating distances from the current sector a player was in to all 20,000 sectors in the game everytime they moved. So couple that with a bunch of players online and it was like dragging a ton of bricks up a steep hill for the server.
We came up with a way for the game to remember navmaps as people play. So instead of the massive calculations for each move it can pull precalculated data out on the spot. Thousands of times faster.
Sometimes waiting is a good thing.
We never noticed the big hit with the 5k test games. It was the 20k main game that really brought out the problem.
